The Prince of Wales visits Tyne and Wear
Published
Today The Prince of Wales carried out engagements in Tyne and Wear, a county in North East England.
The Prince of Wales arrived at Newcastle Central Station where he met representatives from London North Eastern Railway (LNER) and charity Changing Lives. The LNER workers have worked hard to keep the train network running during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Prince then helped to mark the 40th anniversary of the Nexus Tyne and Wear Metro system by taking a ride on the Metro from Newcastle Central to Haymarket, meeting staff along the way. The Tyne and Wear Metro was officially opened by The Queen in November 2021.
Next, The Prince of Wales visited the Discovery Museum to see how local people with long-term health conditions are benefitting from Newcastle’s Ways to Wellness Service, which supports people in the west of Newcastle whose daily lives are affected by certain long-term health conditions.
Joining Prince’s Trust Ambassador Cheryl Tweedy, His Royal Highness met with young people being supported by charity at Cheryl’s Trust Centre. Cheryl Tweedy helped fundraise for the centre, which opened in 2018 and supports young people across the North East, connecting them with training opportunities and jobs.
The Prince met young people enrolled in different Prince’s Trust training programmes, including the Explore Programme and Get into Retail, and presented certificates to graduates of the Team programme.
Finally, in South Shields, The Prince of Wales visited Royal Warrant Holder, J Barbour and Sons Ltd, to mark 100 years of sustainability.
His Royal Highness toured Barbour’s Wax for Life Workshop, where over 25,000 jackets are repaired and rewaxed per year, and heard about the Re-Loved products, Barbour’s upcycling programme.
The British company’s iconic wax jackets, the Bedale and the Beaufort, continue to be made by hand in Barbour's factory.
