The King as Captain General of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, made his first visit to the 7th Air Defence Group Royal Artillery units in Thorney Island and witnessed an immersive operational air defence demonstration showcasing the unit’s roles, capabilities and contributions to defence.
Also known as the Gunners, The Royal Artillery, which is made up of 14 regular regiments and 7 reserve regiments, provide the British Army with its eyes, ears and firepower.
During the visit, His Majesty witnessed the Group’s short-range and medium-range air defence capabilities and met service personnel operating the equipment.
His Majesty also met members of the community within the Barracks when he officially opened the new Junior Ranks’ Restaurant. The King spent time with families of deployed personnel and spoke to deployed soldiers via a live link, serving personnel from the Commonwealth, and local faith leaders.
The Royal Regiment of Artillery, founded in 1716, is believed to have served in every conflict the British Army has been involved with, earning themselves the Battle Honour ‘Ubique’ – Everywhere.
