The Prince of Wales visits Smithfield Market and St Barts Hospital
Published 12/05/2021
The Prince of Wales carried out a number of engagements in London today.
First at Smithfield Market, The Prince saw construction and preservation work being done in preparation for the site to become the new home of the Museum of London. Once it opens, the museum hopes to welcome at least 2 million people per year to experience innovative galleries, exhibitions and events.
During the visit, His Royal Highness climbed up to the roof to take in the market's views and toured the recently rediscovered historic Cocoa Rooms. Charity SAVE Britain's Heritage has been instrumental in preserving the Victorian buildings of Smithfield General Market.
From here, The Prince walked to St Bartholomew's Hospital ahead of the 900th anniversary celebrations, as well as to thank healthcare workers for their efforts during the pandemic.
The hospital has provided free healthcare on the same site since the reign of Henry I, making it the oldest hospital in the UK. During Covid-19, it has served the many diverse communities in East London that have been among the most affected in the UK. During today’s visit, The Prince met with nurses, including those who cared for his father The Duke of Edinburgh, to thank them for their hard work.
As Patron of Barts Heritage, His Royal Highness also visited the hospital's spectacular North Wing to hear of the planned restoration works for the Grade I listed buildings to mark St Bart's Hospital's 900th birthday in 2023.
