The Queen visits the University of Aberdeen

As Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, The Queen has visited the university’s Sir Duncan Rice Library to hear more about the programmes supported by the university for the local community.

Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in September 2012 and named in honour of the University’s former Principal, the Sir Duncan Rice Library provides students with an advanced learning environment. The library also houses the University's modern collection of books including those on Arts, Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences, as well as historic collections of rare books, manuscripts and archives.

During the visit, Her Majesty was introduced to those involved in programmes supported by the university, including students and staff currently involved in the university’s online PGDE primary education course. The online programme, completed over 18 months, is designed to widen access to anyone in Scotland who wishes to obtain a teaching qualification but due to personal circumstances may be unable to attend ‘on campus’ learning.

The Queen also spoke to students who run and take part in a student support focused cooking club called the ‘Savy Students Club’. With support from the University of Aberdeen Development Trust Student Experience Fund, the club teaches students to cook healthy and nutritious meals while taking into account financial challenges.

Finally, Her Majesty met supporters and volunteers of the Aberdeen Football Club Community Trust which works within the Aberdeenshire community. The Trust, established in 2014, works across schools in Aberdeen to tackle the impact of child poverty, reduce social isolation and improve mental wellbeing by using the power of football and supporters’ passion for Aberdeen Football Club.
