The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall today officially opened Meta’s new central London offices.
As part of the visit, hosted by Nicola Mendelsohn, VP Global Business Group, and Steve Hatch, VP Northern Europe, at Meta, Their Royal Highnesses were shown a few different examples of innovative technology built by Meta, which have a variety of positive uses.
The Prince of Wales saw how the company is assisting Ukrainians through their Community Help feature, which is live in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. An information service has been launched on WhatsApp by Ukraine's State Emergency Services which connects users on the ground to critical updates.
Additionally, The Prince had the opportunity to speak to admins of Facebook Groups in Poland that connect Ukrainian refugees with resources including transport, clothing and medication from its group members.
The Prince and The Duchess were then shown a virtual reality headset which helps users explore and learn about places around the world, including its sites, history and culture.
The Prince was also briefed on the 2Africa subsea cable which is a global effort by tech companies to help connect Africa, Europe, and the Middle East with affordable, high-speed internet to three billion people.
Meanwhile, The Duchess of Cornwall spent some time in the studio recording a conversation for her Reading Room account on Instagram.
Before departing, Their Royal Highnesses met charitable organisations at Meta’s London Social Good Far, and took part in a first digital plaque unveiling to officially open the new offices.
London is already Meta’s largest engineering hub outside the US with more than 4,000 employees based at offices in Brock Street, Rathbone Place, Shaftesbury Avenue and now King’s Cross.
