The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have visited Headingley Stadium in Leeds, where they attended the Community Sport and Recreation Awards.
During the visit, Their Royal Highnesses met Leeds Rhinos female players and girls doing Rugby League drills, before joining the Awards ceremony which recognises those changing lives through grassroots sport.
The visit took place on International Women’s Day and, after they arrived, Their Royal Highnesses were met by two pioneers of women’s rugby league, Julia Lee, the UK’s first female rugby league referee, and Lisa McIntosh, a former Great Britain rugby league captain who was the first woman of colour to skipper a British sports team.
The Duke and Duchess heard from girls from four Leeds schools about how they go into the sport and how their current season was going.
The Duke is President of the Sports and Recreation Alliance, a role he took over from his father, The late Duke of Edinburgh in 2009.
