2 Years of the Coronation Food Project

The King has marked the second anniversary of the Coronation Food Project, bringing together Chief Executives and senior leaders from Alliance Food Sourcing - a collaborative group which is leading to systemic change in the food production and retail sector, rescuing thousands of tonnes more food for communities in need.
Inspired by His Majesty and established in 2023, the Coronation Food Project addresses the urgent challenge of reducing food waste while tackling hunger.
In November 2023, senior leaders from across the UK food industry united at the launch of the Coronation Food Project, signing a historic pledge to reduce all forms of waste within the food supply chain and to increase the redistribution of surplus food to those most in need. This commitment marked the formation of Alliance Food Sourcing.
With the support of Alliance Food Sourcing, the Coronation Food Project has achieved remarkable impact over the past two years, rescuing an additional 1,541 tonnes of surplus food. To strengthen the food distribution network and ensure these resources reach communities in need, £20 million has been raised to supercharge delivery efforts.
At Fortnum & Mason today, His Majesty met representatives from Alliance Food Sourcing, which has now contributed 10 million additional meals to the Coronation Food Project over the last two years. The King was shown examples of the meals that have been created from surplus food and provided to communities in need.
His Majesty was also introduced to representatives from food rescue charities including The Felix Project and FareShare, and manufacturers such as 2 Sisters Food Group, Greencore, along with retailers Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer. Business leaders spoke to The King about how they plan to sustain momentum and build on the progress achieved over the past two years.
In the training kitchen, His Majesty joined apprentice chefs from The Felix Project, a key partner of the Coronation Food Project. Fortnum & Mason, a founding supporter of The Felix Project, has provided daily food collections from its Piccadilly store since the charity’s inception, including a collection every Christmas Eve. In 2024 alone, these collections amounted to 4.28 tonnes of surplus food, equivalent to approximately 10,200 meals.
