Letters and messages to The Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee

Published 10/06/2012

The Queen has received an exceptional number of letters and messages of goodwill following the Diamond Jubilee weekend, taking the total to over 130,000 letters and messages in HM’s Diamond Jubilee year. This includes over 60,000 “Jubilee” letters, and over 71,000 electronic messages of congratulations through the official Diamond Jubilee website.

45 sacks of mail were delivered to Buckingham Palace following last weekend’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London and the Correspondence Office at the Palace is expecting a further increase in messages next week as people write over the coming days.

It has been a particularly busy period for the Correspondence Office, with the 60,000 “Jubilee” letters in 2012, far exceeding the figure of 26,000 in 2011 over the same five month period.

In addition, the events of the Jubilee weekend were followed by huge numbers of people both in the UK and overseas through regular updates on the British Monarchy website and the official Diamond Jubilee website. In total, the websites attracted 2,031,057 unique visitors and 7,611,699 page views.

The social media channels of the British Monarchy also proved popular during the Jubilee weekend, enabling people to follow events such as the Thames Pageant, the Diamond Jubilee Concert and the Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Over the four day weekend, (2nd to 5th June), the total views on the Monarchy Flickr account were 1,415,972, while the Royal Channel on YouTube was viewed on 475,604 occasions. The Monarchy Facebook page had 1,846,920 unique views, and the Royal Twitter account gained over 5,000 followers during the Jubilee weekend (reaching a total of 346,858 Twitter followers).
