Graham, Senior Travel and Logistics Officer
After completing an MA in Arts Management, Graham worked as an International Tour Manager for choirs and orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. After ten years spent touring the World, he was ready for a new challenge.
"A friend spotted the advert for Travel and Logistics Officer on the Royal website. I completed the application more out of hope than any real expectation, and was therefore somewhat surprised to be invited for interview at Buckingham Palace. The role enabled me to utilise skills and experience from my time with the Royal Philharmonic in an exciting and new context. After a year I was promoted to my current position".
"Together with my colleagues in the Royal Travel Office, we are responsible for all fixed-wing, helicopter and train travel arrangements for Members of the Royal Family. No two days are the same. One day I'm responsible for short-notice amendments to that day's travel bookings, the next I could be planning a complicated future foreign visit.
"We also oversee staff travel and the logistics of moves between Royal residences, catering for all travel requirements, from a simple train ticket to the transportation of highly valuable pieces of art".
It’s the people in the building that make the Royal Household
"The experience of coming to work at Buckingham Palace cannot be underestimated. But it's the people within the building that make the organisation. It is one of the friendliest organisations I've worked for, and contrary to my expectations, everyone is very approachable and supportive. I suspect that is borne from our unique and common purpose in supporting His Majesty and other Members of the Royal Family".
"The relationships in the Household are also enhanced by the sense of community that is aided by the sports and social clubs open to all".
Finally, Graham has some words of wisdom for anyone thinking of applying for a role with the Royal Household.
"Do not be dissuaded by your own preconceived ideas of the type of person the Royal Household employs. I very nearly didn’t submit my application assuming I'd be wasting my time, which is a mistake I will always be grateful I managed to avoid".
